Is assisted living the same as memory care in Tennessee?
No. In Tennessee both are delivered inside a licensed Assisted Care Living Facility (ACLF), but memory care means a secured unit with dementia-trained staff, which the state reports as “secured beds” within the ACLF license.

Does Tennessee license memory care separately?
No. Tennessee has no stand-alone memory care license. Secured dementia care is part of the Assisted Care Living Facility license (Rule 1200-08-25), and the state report shows how many of a facility's beds are secured.
Can a facility without secured beds care for dementia?
Sometimes. Many ACLFs accept residents with early dementia in their general assisted living area, but a resident who wanders or tries to leave needs a secured unit. Ask the facility directly what it can and cannot manage.
